This
Endurance Expedition group picture taken on the sea
ice in front of the ship in the winter night is from
Frank Hurley's own photo album in the archives of Scott
Polar Research Institute. Hurley had all the expedition
members sign the album around the original print.
After
the Endurance was crushed and sank the expedition was
faced with the prospect of getting themselves and their
thousands of pounds of supplies across the sea ice to
the Antarctic Peninsula, 350 nautical miles (600+ kms)
to the west.
On
October 30, 1915 the crew was ready to begin the quixotic
journey. "Now we start for Robertson Island, boys!"
Shackleton shouted, and they all cheered. Dog teams
ferried small loads of supplies back and forth from
the ship while an advance party hacked down impassable
ice hummocks and scouted the route ahead. Behind them
came the rest of the men hauling the excessively heavy
James Caird.
